New Pattern: Syren Scarf - Happy Anniversary to The Wool Dispensary!

First, Happy Anniversary to The Wool Dispensary! Woot! It's been a yarn since The Wool Dispensary launched a gorgeous line of hand dyed yarns. This year's focus? A color collection based on fairy tales.

The Syren Scarf pattern was created to celebrate the new color collection. It's whimsical and pretty. And it showcases the lovely colors that Sam creates - 13th Fairy and Goblin City to name a few.

The Syren Scarf pattern is available exclusively via Doodlebug Yarn through October 2012. It will then be available for purchase via my Ravelry shop.

Featured Yarn: The Wool Dispensary Useful Poison, a fingering weight MCN blend. Colors: 13th Fairy & Goblin City. This yarn is also available at Doodlebug Yarn.

“But think again,” said the witch; “for when once your shape has become like a human being, you can no more be a mermaid. You will never return through the water to your sisters, or to your father's palace again; and if you do not win the love of the prince, so that he is willing to forget his father and mother for your sake, and to love you with his whole soul, and allow the priest to join your hands that you may be man and wife, then you will never have an immortal soul. The first morning after he marries another your heart will break, and you will become foam on the crest of the waves.” - The Little Mermaid, by Hans Christian Andersen

Free Pattern: Manly Scarf

Almost two years ago (!) I knit up a scarf for my picky significant other. I posted about it on the blog and mentioned I would write up the pattern details.

Well, a bit of time passed and I forgot to post the pattern! I received a little poke the other day from a knitter inquiring - "did I ever write up this pattern?"

I did not! It totally slipped my mind.

And, since the original scarf I knitted was from 2 years ago, it has seen better days :)

So I decided to knit up a quick swatch to show you the stitch pattern detail.

Sample swatch was knit up in Swans Island Organic Merino Bulky in logwood.

The Manly Scarf pattern

Materials:

US 9 needles

~430 yards of worsted weight wool (Malabrigo Merino Worsted used in top photo above - Tortuga colorway)

Gauge (before blocking):

10 sts = 2" in pattern stitch

Finished Measurements (before blocking):

7" wide; 80" long

Pattern:

Cast on 34 sts.

Row 1: K2, *P2, K2; rep from * to end.

Row 2: P2, *K2, P2; rep from * to end.

Row 3: P2, *K2, P2; rep from * to end.

Row 4: K2, *P2, K2; rep from * to end.

Work in established 4 row pattern until scarf measures 80" from cast on edge.

Bind off loosely in pattern.

Weave in ends. Block if desired.

I hope you enjoy the pattern! Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions!

Pattern Preview: Syren Scarf

The Syren Scarf is a fun little project I whipped up in celebration of The Wool Dispensary's first year anniversary.

Just one year ago, The Wool Dispensary raised money via Kickstarter to launch a specially curated line of colorful kettle dyed yarns at Chicago's YarnCon event. It was a great success.

This pretty pattern will be available via Doodlebug Yarn, an online shop that carries the yarn featured: The Wool Dispensary's Useful Poison.

More details soon!

KNIT IN - Benefitting the Better Boys Foundation

I’m going to a Knit In. On September 22nd, I will be participating in a Knit In to benefit the Better Boys Foundation.

(C) Better Boys FoundationNow through September 22, all Breean Elyse pattern sales will go to benefit the Better Boys Foundation.

Consider your pattern purchase as a sponsorship for this worthwhile endeavor.

If you’d like to make a flat donation, or sponsor my knitting ‘per row’, please contact me at breeanelyse@gmail.com. Every little bit helps!

KNIT IN will bring the Chicago knitting community together to support KnitLAB@1512, one of BBF’s most popular youth apprenticeships.

KnitLAB is a textile arts workshop through which youth learn the basics of knitting—slip knots, casting on, knit and purl stitches, increasing/decreasing stitches, reading patterns, and binding off. KnitLAB also takes its work into the North Lawndale community via approved “knit tagging” and public art installations.

The Better Boys Foundation (BBF) is an intentional community. BBF provides a continuum of care and support to children and youth so that the potential nurtured through early childhood programs will be fully and powerfully realized in the elementary, high school, and post-secondary years.

Featured FO: Indigo Swan Cowl by Gayla

Gayla of Doodlebug Yarn was sweet enough to let me share her most recently finished project - an Indigo Swan Cowl.

(C) GaylaGayla used Swans Island Certified Organic Chunky in Marine for her version.

Here's what she had to say about the pattern:

I love Breean’s designs - they always have a sweet little detail that make them special. In this case, it’s the rolled edge of the cowl.

Super fast, I think it took about 2 hours of knitting. This would be a perfect project for last minute holiday gifts.

You can purchase the Indigo Swan Cowl pattern exclusively via Doodlebug Yarn, or as part of Summer Stack.

Thanks for sharing, Gayla!
