Rasta Neckwarmer - Buttonholes
I've received many inquiries about my Rasta Neckwarmer pattern from Malabrigo Book Three. Most of them are regarding the buttonhole bindoff and button placement. I figured I'd write this post in order to illustrate how to finish the neckwarmer.
The pattern consists of a very simple construction - it's basically like knitting a wide, short scarf. The buttonholes are created during the bindoff row - not before or after.
The Bindoff in the pattern states: Work following bind off row passing the first over the second stitch for all sts including each yarn over which creates the butonhole loops.
The buttonholes are created within each yarn over section of the bindoff. Here is an illustration of what the bindoff and button placement should look like:
Please note - the neckwarmer shown only has 3 buttons, whereas the pattern is written for 4 smaller buttons. If you follow the pattern correctly, there will be 4 buttonholes worked across the bindoff edge.
I hope this illustration has helped everyone! Please let me know if you still have questions!
Also, sorry for the fuzzy iphone photos!

When do you complete the second stitch over the first stitch, before or after the yo's?
From your pictures I can see how wonderful the buttonhole's look and how they button up. But my problem is that I am having major problems actually doing the bind off. I keep ending up with these incredibly large loops that would be too large for any buttons.... Would you have any idea what I am doing wrong????
Loren - In order to create the holes along the bind off edge, you must work a few bind of sections of yarn over, then passing the previously bound off stitch (on the right hand needle) over the yarn over st you just created. Repeating this is what creates the holes. I hope I answered your question!
Christine - You might be binding off looser than I did. It's hard to tell without me looking at your work. I might suggest doing fewer repeats of the 'yo, po' for each button hole section along the bind off. This should create smaller holes for you.
Thanks so much for your instructions...I will attempt it during my vacation in the next four days!! It's a Christmas gift to me and then I have about three more skeins of Rasta to make more cowls for the winter months.
